Collections in India without sounding like a scam

Kupe Team · July 18, 2026

India collections is not a speech-to-text demo. It is vernacular, TRAI and DND, a core system that was never designed for a half-second agent, and a borrower who has heard ten fake recovery calls this month. If your agent sounds like a scam, it is a scam — even if the bank logo is real.

The agents that work are short, warm, and useful. They know the EMI. They can take a promise. They can transfer to a human without making the customer repeat the last eight minutes. They do not talk over the customer, and they do not sit in silence while the ledger loads.

The agents that fail read a script in the wrong register, ignore the DND registry, or die the first time someone says “wait, I already paid.” That last one is not an edge case. It is Tuesday. If the agent cannot look up the payment, it will argue with a person who is right. That is how you get a complaint, not a recovery.

Language is not a dropdown. A Hindi flag in a settings panel is not Hindi. Endpointing is different. Numerals are different. People code-switch mid-sentence. If your agent cannot follow “kal evening seven baje call karna,” you are not ready for this market. You are ready for a conference.

Kupe is built for that reality: languages people actually speak, outbound that can respect DND, tools that hit your ledger while they are still on the line, and a transfer when the account is genuinely messy. You pay for minutes, because you already buy minutes — you should not buy seats so a supervisor can watch a dashboard.

If you are an NBFC, a bank, or a fintech collections team, start with one campaign and one language you actually need. Measure promise-to-pay and complaint rate, not “conversation score.” The score is a slide. The money and the complaints are the business.

Train the script with your best human collectors, not with a copywriter who has never sat in a recovery floor. The best collectors are brief. They leave room. They know when to stop. Your agent should copy that, not a 400-word policy PDF.

Disclosure matters. Where the law requires you to say this is an automated call, say it. Where the brand requires you to sound like the institution and not a random number, clone a voice you have rights to. Do not improvise identity. India has heard enough of that.

Retry windows, DND, and quiet hours are not “nice to have.” They are how you stay in business. Configure them per campaign. Review which scripts recovered and which ones need a human. Then change the script. Do not wait for a quarterly vendor QBR.

The product is not “AI collections.” The product is a collector who knows the book, speaks the language, respects the rules, and hands off when the story is complicated. Everything else is a demo.

We will sit on the first campaign with you if you want. We will not pretend a week of playground calls is a cutover. Cutover is live numbers, live ledgers, live complaints. That is the only environment that counts.
